Maryann Hendriks was born in 1964, raised in Dorchester, a small rural town in southwest Ontario. She is an art major graduate of Bealart, with a photographic diploma from Fanshawe College, each earned in London, ON. To develop professionally, she works
independently guided by her mentor at the craft of painting fine art.
Maryann worked many years as an entrepreneur, always harbouring a desire to paint professionally. 2005 saw opportunity for her to relocate to the Okanagan area of British
Columbia and begin that journey. Transgressing through the traditional stylized Canadian landscape painting and experimenting with abstraction, she now finds her language in a brightly coloured semi-abstract still life genre. A lifelong love of flowers,
an appreciation both for all things natural as well as quality man-made decoration, fuel this creative fusion.
By utilizing acrylic paints and mediums, Maryann has integrated a multi layered technique of thick and thin to prepare her canvas.
With a solid layer of texture and colour in place, from a bold primary palette, paint is laid into the subject area with a wide array of strokes, marks and scratches. Layers of paint become quite cumulative in some areas, negligible in others. Next, a
series of gritty negative coatings cut out the subject matter from its ground, the subject resulting in an undeniable dominance. Finally a high gloss rub allows the large variance in surface sheen in her work.
Maryann has exhibited with the
Federation of Canadian Artists frequently and has acquired Signature Member status.
