Elzbieta Krawecka is a Polish-born artist who creates studies of the sky and interpretations of the landscape reminiscent of European landscape painters. The soft and ephemeral landscapes are anchored by a hint of realism. With an underlying theme of the
sky as a reflection of our collective consciousness, she paints beautiful cloud formations and atmospheric effects. The glimpses of land, roads and buildings below seem almost universal in appeal.
At a young age, Krawecka moved from Krakow,
Poland with her family to Kuwait on the Persian Gulf. Her parents worked as architects in Kuwait for nine years. Krawecka continues to be a frequent and experienced international traveler.
She received her formal art training at the Ontario
College of Art and Design (OCAD) between 1989-1994, and she participated in OCAD’s Off-Campus Program in Florence, Italy between 1992-1993.
Krawecka has exhibited her work throughout Ontario since 1997. Her distinctions include an artist
residency at the Pouch Cove Foundation in April 2004 and first prize at the Ontario Society for Artists Juried Show in Toronto in 2003.
Artist Statement:
My paintings are an exploration of movement and space. Through experimenting with
colour shifts and contrasts, I observe the transient nature of light and other elements that qualify a landscape. I am interested in large areas and open spaces, such as skies and surfaces defined by pattern formations.
I use thick, opaque paint
often applied in parts with a palette knife followed by translucent glazes of thinner washes. This creates texture and depth through contrast while giving the paintings weight and substance.
I am working towards a style that combines traditional
painting techniques with personal experiences. My inspiration comes from my travels and exposure to world cultures. Perhaps this accounts for why my work seeks out subjects that resist change. Despite their variance, my skies refer ultimately to a
universal space of collective memory.
...within these paintings, movement and space pose a question, which pertains to entering a work where place and time are not defined
...what is required is something personal ...a memory...a
thought...a colour...an ephemeral quality of sunlight...a timeless sky
...a painting style...inspired by the techniques of the Old Masters is the personal exploration of the transient nature of light
