Elka combines old world aesthetics, modern sensibilities and a touch of the theatrical to create luminous, crumbled patina-covered canvases. Using acrylic paint and mixed media, she creates multi-layered works of exquisite texture. Fragmented images that
conjure up the vivacity of old world still-life compositions with the weathered patina of old Italian frescos. Surface, dimension and relationship….The tension between vibrant tones, expressive style, and playful, romantic themes combine to produce
artwork that is sensual and mysterious, modern yet traditional.
Since leaving Poland, after taking a master's in construction engineering, Nowicka has worked as a fashion designer, interior decorator, merchandising director, faux finisher, fabric
embellisher and now, full-time painter.
"It's strange that I ended up doing this because my favourite subject in school was always math. I was the least artistic in my family, but when I left university I learned that engineering is a very
chauvinistic field, so I started a fashion business and designed clothes that sold across Poland and Germany."
In 1990 she packed up her books on everything from old Byzantine art to Polish icons, and moved to Winnipeg where she worked in
costume-design for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She eventually started to design clothes for Hughes and then became involved with interior design. She started to work with faux-texturing. Launching a line of hand-painted Thai silk bedding turned her on to
painting, and since then she has been absorbed in creating acrylic and mixed-media representational works on canvas.
Nowicka's works are multi-textured, with an old-world patina, strong colours, romantic themes and a crusty, peeling look. She
achieves this with up to 10 layers of crackling glazes, liquid acrylics, impasto gel mixed with sand and marble dust, dry-walling mud, paint and modeling paste.
Artist Statement:
I am inspired by antiques and classics, glamour and
theatrics, and the close union of old and new. I rely on the symbolism and imagery to capture the intensity of emotions and reflections. Each subject is built up with layers upon layers of experiences and relationships. Multi textured technique intrigues
me - it permits the control but allows the spontaneity in the creative process. The planned and random effects give each piece its unique beauty and individual patina.
