Doug Frey

Douglas Frey, a Saskatchewan artist, has been working as a full time Goldsmith since 1978, designing and handcrafting jewellery in platinum, gold and silver.

Doug Frey specializes in rock painting-inspired and contemporary jewellery. The rock paintings (pictographs) of Northern Saskatchewan are the inspiration for a series of jewellery pieces. The ancestors of today's northern Cree were the artists who created these paintings from 300 to 2000 years ago. Animals, humans, mythical and abstract figures were painted in red ochre on the lake and riverside Precambrian cliff faces of northern Canada. The places and paintings were part of the spiritual life of these people. These hauntingly beautiful sites are now a memorial to the lost culture of the ancestors of the Cree people. Through this series, Doug is paying tribute to the strength and ingenuity of this unique culture.

Doug Frey's desire to further make his pieces unique and to increase the design possibilities of his handmade contemporary jewellery, he began cutting high quality gem cabochons in 1990. In 1994, Doug began faceting stones for his finished pieces. All work is done in his studio; Doug maintains a high level of quality by personally handcrafting all jewellery and cutting many of the gemstones found in the jewellery pieces.

Doug Frey's work is available in a number of select galleries throughout Canada. He has been an active member of the craft community in Saskatchewan and in Canada for many years.
