Wendy Powell grew up in a small community 200 miles south of James Bay. With the wilderness literally at her doorstep, it didn't take long for Wendy to notice the abundant wildlife of the region and begin sketching the animals she
observed.
Wendy Powell's artwork was well recognised in the community by the time she finished high school, and she received several commissions, including one from the Ministry of Natural Resources to draw a series of moose. Science and
medicine also interested Wendy though, and she began studies of the subject at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. "I didn't have much time for art at university" says Wendy. "I enjoyed science, but I knew it was only a matter of time
before I returned to my paintings." Wendy graduated with a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. degree in physiology. Nevertheless, the day after graduation she picked up her paintbrush and never looked back.
Wendy Powell's paintings began to skyrocket the moment
she returned to the easel. Both her first amateur exhibition and her first professional show were held over an astounding feat for a new artist! Since then Wendy has presented three more one-person shows, has released two series of limited edition
prints, has exhibited in juried exhibitions and has accepted many commissions. Her paintings are now sold in galleries in Alberta, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island and they stand out because of the realism, intricacy, and composition; she
conveys wilderness in her own very distinctive style.
Wendy Powell became a full-time wildlife artist in 1993 and was the featured artist at the Etobicoke Committee Ducks Unlimited Canada third annual fund raising dinner. A year later, she was
the featured artist at the 100th Wish celebration of the Moncton Children’s' Wish Foundation.
