Paul Gauthier's work captures the incredible beauty of the Canadian wilderness in a dynamic impressionist manner. Paul's extensive travels across Canada are reflected in his thoughtful interpretations of wild habitat from the Arctic to the western
mountains, the boreal forests of the Canadian shield and beyond to the Atlantic provinces. The distinctive atmosphere of each area is represented in landscapes charged with bold interpretations of colour, mood and simplicity of design, created within a
dramatic visual context.
Gauthier has a singular style, developed while understudying his father, Joachim Gauthier, a close contemporary of the Canadian Group of Seven painters. His association with Canada's legends led to a joint effort with
A.J. Casson in 1987 to produce a serigraph entitled "Baie Fine Entrance". This further led to Paul's involvement as a consultant and actor in a television production, based on the life of Casson.
In 1991, the Town of Markham honoured Paul
with the Town of Markham Achievement and Civic Recognition Award for Art and Cultural contribution to the community.
Expeditions of the Firth, Nahanni and Tatshenshini Rivers, have made Gauthier more aware than ever of the ecology of these
habitats and the great need to protect them from commercial encroachment.
